A recent study indicates that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these medications should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
